Math Stars Challenge

math-1I was looking at the following website from NC DPI:  http://community.learnnc.org/dpi/math/archives/2005/06/math_stars_news.php

There are very useful newsletters for students in grades 1-8 to practice math problem solving skills.  I would like to start working with small groups to go over strategies for solving word problems using the website as a resource.

You are welcome to print out any of these newsletters at home and work on skills during the holiday break or weekends.

If you need any help, please let me know.

FOOD LION- Register your MVP card!!!

mvp-card

BSE PTO has enrolled in the Food Lion “Lion Shop & Share” program. It is an easy, convenient way to raise money for our school. Each time you shop at Food Lion and use your MVP card, a portion of your total grocery bill will be donated to BSE PTO. Please help us by linking your MVP card and shopping at Food Lion. You may link your MVP card by clicking here. Then click on “Register MVP cards”, click “Select Organization” (NC, Newport, Bogue Sound PTO), and “Add MVP Cards”. We must have at least 25 MVP cards linked in order to participate.

Last year we raised $186.18 through Food Lion. So far this year, we have received 2 checks for a total of $65.56. The more people we have signed up and shopping at Food Lion, the more money we’ll earn!

PLEASE REGISTER YOUR MVP CARD!!!

Quest Atlantis!!!

quest

“Quest Atlantis (QA) is an international learning and teaching project that uses a 3D multi-user environment to immerse children, ages 9-15, in educational tasks. QA combines strategies used in the commercial gaming environment with lessons from educational research on learning and motivation. Participation in this game is designed to enhance the lives of children while helping them grow into knowledgeable, responsible, and empathetic adults. Explore our site and learn more about this exciting project.”

“Completing Quests requires that members do real-world, socially and academically meaningful activities, such as conducting environmental studies, researching other cultures, calculating frequency distributions, analyzing newspaper articles, interviewing community members, and developing action plans… etc.”

I think you will find the kids will not only learn alot, but have fun doing it as well!
